Bridlington SpaBridlington Spa
Bridlington Spa is a much cherished and valued amenity to the East Riding of Yorkshire coastal town. Located right next to the sea, the Spa building houses events of national and international repute, in doing so adding considerably to the seaside resort's local economy.

In its heyday a popular building, the Spa began to visibly suffer from the wear and tear of regular use, and was not always the easiest place for modern events to be staged because of its confusing layout. A recent total overhaul, remodel and refit has now brought the building up to date introducing more flexible and attractive features, which will help attract new business. The key elements of the re-development focused on improving circulation and accessibility within the building, reorganising and remodeling the circulation space between the Theatre and the Royal Hall.

Being situated directly next to the sea is going to take its toll on any building, and Bridlington’s Spa is no exception. Whilst the town council was keen for the distinguished old building to keep its traditional appearance and classic period good looks, it was equally important that the venue was restored in a way that would make it weather tight and fit for purpose for many years to come. The refurbishment needed to make use of modern materials to meet the high performance criteria and demanding location – yet these same materials also needed to reflect the classic style of the much loved Edwardian Spa. Attention to detail was even extended to the new roofs.

Harmonising with the Spa’s design whilst still performing to a high standard under prevailing coastal weather meant that a robust roofing system was needed. The answer came with Superdeck® by Corus.

By definition, roof decking supports the roof elements, with a membrane over the top providing the weatherproofing layer. This venerable building is now protected by Superdeck®, the composite roof system that is ideal for major building envelope installations.

Superdeck’s® pioneering approach combines the best features of composite roofing panel technology with environmentally friendly IPS Rubberfuse synthetic waterproofing membranes. A three layer composite panel system, Superdeck® is a 32mm deep steel deck, a continuously injected foam insulation core and a single ply rubberfuse TPO flat roofing membrane to the outer face. As well as superior tensile strength and outstanding air tightness through heat welded seams, the IPS Rubberfuse environmentally sympathetic membrane polymer base includes no polluting agents or plasticizers. It also has a high performance u value of .25 – an essential added performance value for a building sitting literally five metres from the chilly North Sea.

The environmental aspect of TPO was of special importance, in specifying a product with the least environmental impact.

At Bridlington Spa the majority of the 2,000sqm flat roof area is flat, however there are two tower areas with a visible curve which have been over clad in a Corus Panels and Profiles built up system, with the IPS membrane then laid over a ply substructure. With its attractive aluminium coloured finish, from a distance these raised areas have all the appearance of a more expensive traditional lead standing seam roof.
